Remembering Joe Romano

 
Here is a pictorial tribute to the late legendary jazz saxophonist, Joe Romano. I was honored to have had the opportunity to have known Joe for over 30 years. In particular, hearing him during my early years of listening to jazz at The Portside, had a tremendous impact on me. Joe (a.k.a. JR) was a very important musical influence, not only on my life, but also many others. I most likely would never have got into radio if it weren't for Joe Romano. When Joe came back to Rochester while on leave from the Air Force, he was able to sit in with the legendary jazz altoist Charlie Parker! This took place at the Times Square Lounge, which is the building located in downtown Rochester, at the corner of Exchange Street and Broad Street. This must have been a huge turning point for Romano's style of playing, in that he truly emulated the playing of Bird throughout his long career. As I was interviewing Joe for the liner notes that I wrote for his first and only CD, This Is The Moment, he shared that playing next to Bird was a thrill of a lifetime. I was honored to have known Joe Romano and glad that he was a big part of my life.
